First, the conclusion: when registering for overseas social media, check the number type first, then the country. If a US number is on a VoIP line, it may still fail to register for WhatsApp. Switching to a real carrier mobile number, even if it's not a US number, is usually more reliable.
Once the number type is fine, you can roughly choose a country like this:
- Want the most features and support across all platforms: US (+1) real carrier number
- Mainly targeting European users, or focusing on instant messaging like WhatsApp and Telegram: UK (+44)
- Only need one-time verification with a tight budget: Try Southeast Asian numbers like Indonesia or the Philippines, but they are more likely to be blocked by platform controls
- Account will be used long-term, and you'll need to change devices or enable two-step verification later: Regardless of the country, use a renewable long-term number
Step 1: Rule Out VoIP Numbers First
Platforms judge a phone number mainly by two things: its line type and its country. Whether you can receive verification codes is often directly determined by the line type.
WhatsApp states clearly in its official help center: it does not support VoIP numbers, free forwarding numbers, or paid special service numbers. The regular version also does not support landlines. Registration requires a valid mobile number that can receive SMS or calls. Telegram, X, and TikTok do not have equally explicit public terms, but many platforms use carrier lookup APIs to identify the line type before sending the code. VoIP number ranges are often flagged as high-risk, which can result in not receiving the code, being asked for extra verification, or the account being restricted soon after registration.

How to Choose Between Common Countries
US (+1): Broadest compatibility, but strictest checks on number type
Platforms like X, TikTok, Instagram, and Telegram have the most complete support for US numbers, and new features are usually rolled out in the US first. The problem is that US numbers are heavily abused, and platforms are strictest in filtering VoIP numbers within US number ranges. So whether a US number works basically depends on whether it is a real carrier number.
UK (+44) and Europe: More recognized by instant messaging platforms, but watch for compliance reviews
UK numbers have better trust on instant messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram, and are less likely to be classified as bulk-abused number ranges. Note that the UK Online Safety Act and age verification requirements in multiple European countries have led some platforms to stricter account reviews for these regions, and you may need to confirm your age after registration. This is a platform compliance process, and changing numbers won't solve it.
Southeast Asia (Indonesia +62, Philippines +63, etc.): Cheap, but only suitable for one-time verification
Southeast Asian numbers have abundant supply and low prices, suitable for lightweight one-time verification or feature testing. The downside is that some number ranges have been heavily abused, making them more likely to be blocked or downranked, and some platforms have regional restrictions on business features. Number Country Must Match Network Environment
When registering on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, they compare IP location, device time zone and language, and phone number country code together. If you use a US number but the IP is from a data center in another country, it's easy to be judged as an environment mismatch, triggering extra verification or restrictions.

Short-term or Long-term: Will You Need to Receive Codes Again?
An issue more easily overlooked than choosing a country: Will you need to receive SMS on this number again in the future?
Social platforms don't stop sending codes after registration. WhatsApp and Telegram re-verify when you log in on a new phone; X and Instagram often require verification of the bound phone number during异地 login checks, when enabling two-step verification, or when appealing a ban. If you used a one-time number, by then the number is no longer in your hands, and you may not be able to recover the account.

If You Don't Receive the Verification Code, Don't Rush to Change Countries
When you don't receive the code, the common situation is that the platform didn't send it at all (the number range is blocked, or the environment triggered risk control), or the SMS is delayed in transit. It's advisable to wait for the platform's resend countdown to finish, then check if the IP and number country match. Don't repeatedly resend across multiple countries.
Also be clear: SMS receiving services only forward the SMS to you. Whether you can receive the code and whether registration succeeds is determined by the platform's rules at that time, and no channel can guarantee success every time.
